Coque's Journey
Cōque Ross is an unusual name for an unusual musician with an equally unusual path. Born in Kensington, Maryland, he moved to Miami at 10. Starting over in a new city meant plenty of time alone — time he spent learning guitar and, by 12, writing his own songs. By 13 he was recording on a 4-track and studying the craft of songwriting in earnest.
The youngest of four, Cōque inherited his musical education from his older sisters' record collection. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Elton John, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, The Bee Gees, Chic, and Earth, Wind & Fire came first — a foundation of melodic muscle and groove. Hard rock followed: Black Sabbath, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Van Halen, Styx, Foreigner, and Fishbone. Then the British contingent — David Bowie, ELO, The Police, The Smiths, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, Sting, and Level 42. That breadth never left him. It's in the writing, the singing, and the guitar playing to this day.
Through high school he sang and played guitar in bands. In college he was writing, recording, and performing with an all-original funk rock band called Big Brother — playing universities across Florida while studying sound engineering and logging serious hours in Miami recording studios. He was learning how to produce his own music from the ground up.
After graduate school, Cōque took a position teaching English at a college prep school — literature, poetry, and writing. He developed a specialty in Arthurian literature, built a one-of-a-kind Medieval Summer Camp for kids, and ran a sword fighting school for children and adults that lasted a decade. All of it fed the songwriter. Then, in 2010, he went back to his first love — relocating to Florida's Treasure Coast and becoming a full-time gigging musician.
Over the next 12 years he played well over 2,000 shows: solo, duo, trio, quartet, and a 10-piece corporate event band. He never stopped writing. In late 2023, he relocated to Fresno, California to focus solely on his work as a singer-songwriter.
His debut single, "You Fo Me" — a love letter to the ocean and the joy of the water — arrived in July 2023. His follow-up, "Let Us Go," a romantic song about moving boldly into the future with the right person, came in December 2023. "Always Be" followed: a funk song about the lightning strike of love at first sight, built on Nile Rodgers-style rhythm guitars, a driving clavinet, killer horn arrangements, and an SRV-style guitar solo that earns its place. Then "No Chemistry" — a sharp, 80s-inflected song about knowing when you're with the wrong person, with guitar nods to Alex Lifeson of Rush and Tom Scholtz
of Boston.
His recent and upcoming releases draw on a lifetime of experience, travel, literature, and an endlessly curious musical appetite. Having lived through real personal challenges — loss, grief, reinvention — Cōque writes about the better parts of relationships, affirmations of joy, the power of love, and what it means to live fully. His next single, "Dead by the End of This," arrives in October 2026 — a cinematic thriller with a split guitar solo, epic string arrangements, and an ending that delivers exactly what the title promises. His listeners find in that music something poignant, familiar, and genuinely their own.
